How Heroin Addiction Kills You?

According to studies, few new heroin users die from a heroin overdose. Statistics showed that only 17 percent of new users accounted for the heroin overdose deaths. With heroin addiction, the risk of overdose death is increased.

The danger of dying from heroin increases after 20 years of heroin addiction. In an earlier research, it showed that 16 percent of heroin users die after 30 years of heroin use. It is higher than the rate of people who died due to cocaine abuse (6.5 percent) and meth abuse (1.5 percent).

Heroin use can kill you in a number of ways. It is not only caused by overdose.

  • Organ damage

With increasing heroin addiction, the risk of heart attack is high among longtime users. The pile up of heroin and other additives in the body can cause clots or infections of different organs such as blood vessels, lungs, liver and heart.

Heroin is most of the time cut with the use of dangerous chemicals such as poisons or household cleaners to increase the strength of the drug. The use of these powerful and poisonous chemicals is very toxic that can cause various health problems over a long period of time.

  • Hepatitis

Infectious disease such as hepatitis is one of the common effects of using heroin. Heroin users can get infected with hepatitis through blood or body fluid contacts such as saliva and semen.

Users who share needles and other injection paraphernalia with other heroin users are more susceptible of contracting hepatitis. People who have sexual contact with those who have hepatitis are also likely to acquire the disease.

  • HIV/AIDS

People with heroin addiction who inject the drug can easily acquire HIV/AIDS by sharing needles with infected users. There is no medication found yet to cure HIV/ AIDS. People abusing drugs such as heroin can die from this disease.

  • Overdose

Overdose is the act of taking too much of heroin more than they can handle. Overdose was found a result of a combination of heroin with other drugs, whether it is a depressant or a stimulant.

Heroin, a depressant, can cause slow heartbeat and respiratory functions. Those who overdose on heroin usually experience shutting down of the respiratory system as the body forgets to breathe. The combination of heroin with other toxic drugs increases the risk of deaths as the effects of the drugs are multiplied.

It was also found that unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking or poor nutrition can increase the chance of people dying from heroin abuse.  Over time, heroin addiction and risky habits and behaviors may contribute to the deaths of heroin users.
